elevated liver enzymes caused by breastfeeding?/?

My second son is 4 1/2 month old, While I was preganant with him, I was diognosted with Cholostasis for the second time ( I endured this with my first preganancy as well)
about 2 months ago I started feeling ill and found out I had elevated liver enzymes, after numerus blood tests and a MRI my doctors still cant find anything wrong. they were elevated well over the 200 range the first time I was tested, I just tested 3 days ago and they were at 168 ( and I have been feeling much better) I was told the normal range was around 60. Sence cholostasis is cause by your liver and gall bladder not working properly due to the pregnancy horomones, can breastfeeding also effect my enzymes? I enjoy breastfeeding but should try stopping?
Thanks Sarah

Hi,

I would strongly doubt that breastfeeding causes elevated liver enzymes.

If you are enjoying  breastfeeding, and of course it is great for your baby, you should continue.  Breastfeeding is also generally much easier than formula feeding and relaxing for mum and baby.  This can only be good.

Good that the enzymes are coming down slowly, and that you are feeling better.

Best wishes

What does your doctor suggest?  I would defer to them with respect to the issue of breastfeeding and the possibility of it elevating your liver enzymes.  I personally do not know anything about your condition, but I did search your situation on the Internet and it would appear you are not alone (in that some other women who have elevated enzymes believe it was from breastfeeding because when they stopped, the numbers returned to normal.)  One woman commented that during lactation and breastfeeding, several enzymes can increase in number.  I do not know the validity behind this so I would suggest you request a referral to a specialist if you aren't already.  One again, I am sorry I am not much help, but I hope that you get it resolved.  Just a side note, when I breastfeed, my prolactin levels (as all women show when the breastfeed) get extremely high, because I have a pituitary tumour which also secretes Prolactin.  So having said that, I do believe nursing elevates various things.
In addition to anything I have mentioned, please keep in mind, that while I or others may have extensive knowledge in many areas, you should always seek professional medical advice from your own physician, as it pertains to medical conditions or concerns.
Good luck, and if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to message me directly.

Sincerely,

Thanks guys! My doc and other docs are telling me it has nothing to do with breastfeeding, and they think the numbers will slowly go down, so we will wait and see!
