TMJD is a result of Ehlers-Danlos and EDS is related to Chiari......so if u have not been tested for EDS u should if u have TMJD.
The mouth guard is something that is often suggested....u may want to go to a sporting goods store and buy one used for football or hockey that u put in boiling water to soften then put in ur mouth to shape it to ur mouth....the one the Dentist makes costs a lot more.....
I have Chiari, TMJ, wear a night guard, and also have an inexplicable "hot" nerve to a back molar. I have to take ibuprofen to have my teeth cleaned too.
Someone suggested to me to imagine having something round in your mouth (a gumball, a cherry) several times per day. It helps.
I have a bite guard for night and it helps a great deal! -zygy
I also have chiari and tmj. My tmj is sooo bad that RA dr says there's nothin they can do to help. They can give injections but they told me it wasn't possible for me to get them, its that bad. I haven't chewed gum in like 3 yrs. Stay away from chewy or really hard foods and candy. Rst and relax jaw whenever possible. I also grind my teeth and clench my jaw. God luck to u. ... .Dana
I'm not sure if TMJ is common with Chiari or not, but I do have both. The best thing I have found to help with my TMJ is a mouth guard from my dentist that I use at night. I tried over the counter guards, but this is the only one that has worked for me. I also take aleve or another OTC pain killer before going to the dentist because holding my mouth open that wide makes my jaw hurt.
Good luck!
