Today Sucked....

I'm sure you're all tired of me...  but I know you all get it.

Today sucked...  just plain sucked.  Mike started the day by 9am with violent hiccups - the kind that thrust your abdomen so hard your head jerks.  This went on until almost 8pm.  At 7pm they finally caved and ordered something to give him from pharmacy.  But by then the damage of the day was done and he was miserable.  Surgical site pain (which was expected), headache from the hiccups, and by then he was having some dizzy spells.  If he was awake...  this is what he went through.  Ughh!

Add to that he still hasn't been able to "go to the bathroom"...  Poor guy has tried EVERYTHING they've offered and so far nothing has worked.  He's frustrated and in his words he "humiliated" himself without the desired results.  This is the one thing keeping him in the hospital...  can't come home till it's successful.

It was so hard to leave him tonight, seeing him so miserable.  But I knew he needed some alone time and they had just given him all his meds - he's on all oral meds now - Vicodin, Valium, Zantac, Decadrom, and Ibuprofin (replaced the Toradol).  Really hoping he's able to sleep!

Tell me tomorrow will be better because I'm spent and I'm sure he is too!

He did get 2 hours of a good solid nap...  took this picture of him sleeping peacefully.  Made my heart smile for a little while today!  (If you look closely you can see one of the 4 "screw holes" in his head)

Im sorry he's having a rough time.  Is he eating?  I ate Nothing in the hosp and, sorry to say, was constipated for weeks. I'm w/Zygy, I wanted off the pain meds ASAP.
One day at a time.

So sorry to hear it was such a bad day, I will be hoping today is much better!  Pain meds are terrible for constipation... I quit taking them as fast as possible.  It does sound like they have him on all the right constipation meds though so I would say something will eventually work!  It really stinks not to be able to take pain meds but it is really miserable if it totally shuts down your system!  I usually choose to be in pain!  The hiccups sound just nasty, I can't believe he had to suffer with them for so long.  Hopefully he got some sleep and was able to relax a bit after such a hard day. Crossing my fingers that today will be easier and with less pain!  -Zygy

I know when i took Vicodin for my shoulder surgery it made me so constipated ...so maybe its that ..it killed my stomach and caused sooo much stomach pain with constipation..could be that XD i couldn't go for a while even though i took stool softners.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's - and hour's day.  I have been praying for your family and just wanted to send hugs and that he has a much better day tomorrow.  I agree with Selma about magnesium  it helps both with sleep and to keep things moving. Hope you all get some much needed sleep tonight.  June

Some people get violent hiccups from certain narcotics. if they continue maybe they could try a different pain medication. Just a thought.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery! :)

Yep - he has a pillow from home.  It's a big old one that's easily "moldable" to help him get comfortable.

And yes - he is getting uncomfortable.  He's been eating good and even eating things that normally help him....  but no luck.  They had him on Miralax and stool softeners before he even left the ICU to go to stepdown.

hey there im sorry today was rough, can only get better one day at a time. does he have a pillow from home? if so thats a great idea i will have to remember on the 20th for my second surgery. is he uncomfortable and feel the need to have a bm? because drs dont get the body goes thru so much during surgery and then the pain meds dont help. and not eating much after tends to make you not go. i had a stool softener perscribed right after, some gel pill. but i do not remember goin before i could go home?! better day tomorow and the days to come.

Could hiccups be a sign of a CSF leak already?!?  I see that they can be a symptom fo CM1....  just makes me wonder.

Ask about magnesium citrate, there r diff flavors...but u drink it, and I had to drink it b4 a colonoscopy so it will open up the flood gates so to speak...lol...so he may not need to drink as much as I did but magnesium will work, it is just all the meds used for surgery....

AH I see, well glad it worked...if u think of it ask tomorrow...I am curious...

Oops - yes.  They'be been giving him Miralax twice a day, Senekot, Colace, he had a suppository, AND they gave him Theravac tonight.  So far...  nothing has worked.

Not sure what they gave him for the hiccups - didn't think to ask.  We just wanted him to have something.

Hi...so sorry he had such a rough day, but the days do get better.....

Is that all the meds he is on?...How about a stool softener? He should be on one for the next couple of weeks.

May I ask , what did they give him to help with the hiccups?

Sending ((hugs)) to u and to Mike
