Intense pain when coughing

I was diagnosed with a Chiari Malformation 15 years ago. My pain and symptoms seem to be gradually getting worse. I currently have a bad cough associated with a virus. The pain I experience when I cough is intense. Sometimes I feel like I am going to pass out. It only last a few seconds, thankfully, but due to the frequency of the cough, it is happening a lot. My question is this: Is the pain dangerous or just another unpleasant aspect of this condition?

Thank you. I have heard of this doctor, and another in the same practice as him. Unfortunately, my insurance does not cover either of these doctors. Thanks for your reassurance that this pain isn't dangerous. I was worried about the amount of pressure/pain, and concerned about the damage that it might be doing.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

The cough should not be dangerous.....but is quite painful. I just had that virus too and you will want to take a suppressant to help reduce how much you cough.....a cold or virus can trigger symptoms to increase as can stress from our daily lives.....anything can cause the symptoms to change.

Do you have a true Chiari specialist that you are seeing? Have you had a recent MRI?

I see a general neurologist. I would really like to see a specialist. I have not had  a recent MRI. I'm really struggling with the pain today. Every time I cough it feels like the back of my head is exploding and I see stars. The pain is lasting longer today as well. I'm just miserable. I am taking a suppressant. It just isn't helping that much.
