Newb update

I talked to my doctor today and he said that I have a syrinx at C-5. I asked him what he thought about it being Chiari.  He said the "report" didn't mention anything about it.  He then said he wanted me to bring the disk by so he could take a look.  He told me he wanted to refer me to a neursurgeon and I asked him to please refer me to Dr. Daniel Barrow at Emory.  What do you think???  What causes a syrinx?

The best way to find out is call the office...if they ask u to spell it, or they say could u say that again...they r good indications it is not something they do too often.....but call and talk to his staff.

Let us know what u find out.

I talked to my doc today and they said they were told by Barrow to be referred to Dr. Refai at Emory.  Is this common practice?  Also Refai's areas of clinical interest on the Emory website does not list chiari.  Is there a way I can check if he even does that type of surgery or knows anything about it?

HI...well a syrinx can be the result of an injury...could have been a fall or a MVA....and from a few yrs ago....

Having a blockage of CSF flow can cause a syrinx to form as well...so it is possible to have chiari with a blockage. But , it is also possible to have a syrinx without having chiari.

Once u get to the NS u will have a better idea.....we can only guess.
