hi and welcome to our group!
this may be totally unrelated, but then again, it might be a new place to look. i also have that same pain. i had it before my surgery, then it went away. i was in an mva and it came back. i have recently been diagnosed with cranial instability, but i also have a buldging disc at c5-6. i would check with his nl to see about occipital nerve involvment. from what i understand (and please remember that i am only a patient, not a dr!) the occipital nerve can affect the ears....it has, and does, with me. i just had the block done last thursday for the first time.
i'm so very sorry your son is going thru this...it's terrible for anyone to suffer, but it's always worse when it's a child. i hope you can find if not some answers, at least some compassion, empathy and friendship here!

I have that same pain on occasion like someone stabbing an ice pick in my ear. It only lasts a few minutes thankfully. But it is one of those pains that you can ignore is so severe. When the docs have looked at it they dont see anything wrong as far as fluid, etc. I have a hard time keeping up with all the specialists I need to see. I really need to go back to the opthalmologist to have my eyes rechecked now, I guess I need to add an ENT for my ears.
I am sure another one of those horrible Chiari symptoms.
Welcome to the chiari forum...I am glad u came over : )
Ray is right, ER's band aid the immediate issue and send u to ur reg dr or a specialist, it is not the best place to go with a condition like chiari .....too many NS's do not recognize how it may affect us.
But ear pain is not uncommon.....I have had it where it felt a tho someone was jabbing an ice pick into my ear.....I must admit I have not had that pain since my chiari surgery.....I still have ear issues but nothing like that.

You should get your son accessed by an Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor to rule out an ear problem, it may be CM related. ER Doctors only look for the obvious cause and would be unlikely to have even heard of CM as it would be something they would not encounter very often if ever in the ER department.
