Here is the thread on the sun and zippers and I did find out since posting this that my EDS is more to blame for my skins reaction to using the sun block......
It's a great topic...you know I would have never thought to worry about my scar if I hadn't read this...and I do have my hair up a lot in the summer!!
I do what you do too...my kids are always wondering why they have to wear it and I don't!! But they won't sit still long enough in the shade!!
Thanks!
Thanks for the info...I always wear a hat or get a HA even with sunglasses...but, I do move to the shade and keep my sun ratio to shade moderate : )
Wasn't sure this was going to be a good topic....more worried that zipperheads remember to cover their scars...and do not want neone to burn...cuz we do need the vit D naturally.
Using sunblock in my family is not a choice unfortunately. Most of us are very pale skinned and will burn very quickly even if we cover up, it gets us where we are exposed. In fact my son went to camp and chose not to wear it and now he is suffering for that choice. I have a friends who spent all her summers in the sun and very rarely used sunblock due to her complexion and last summer she found out she had stage 3 melanoma...very scary..so you DO have to be careful.
That said...there are lots of other ways to protect yourself. My first choice of protection for my kids is to make them wear hats and I buy them all those sun shirt that are 100% UVA/B proof. Then I just sunscreen the rest of the exposed areas...I will add that this is when we go on a full day at the beach...I am also a believer that we have to get our Vit D so a lot of times I just limit their sun exposure and don't use any protection at all. However, when you are on summer holidays you can imagine how hard it would be to make kids come inside every 15 minutes....so sunscreen is needed.
Another thing..many different kinds of sunscreens cause allergic reactions so you have to watch for that as well. The ONLY kind my kids can use w/o it causing a rash is Ombrelle made by L'oreal. It has no scent and has fairly gentle ingredients. I checked and it does NOT have retinyl palmitate. What you DO want in a good sunscreen is Parasol and Titanium dioxide. Again, PABA has proven to be bad too and you should avoid.
Sorry for the book...but I had to do some research b/c of my family's horrible skin!!
Carolyn
a friend of mine took her 4 kids to the lake and smothered them in sunscreen, banana boat i believe it was, she didn't put any on herself cause she wanted a tan.
the next day, her kids all had horrible burns with blisters and she was burned too, but nothing like the kids! she too wondered about the effectiveness of sunscreens after that! i, myself, have never even heard of this happening before but apparently it does. just don't know how often. at first i thought it was because it was some off brand cheap stuff, but she showed me the bottle and it was waterproof name brand banana boat with a high spf.
i am light skinned and after 5 min i will burn and then freckle more later (i used to think it was impossible to get even MORE freckles than i already had. ha ha) ,
I have to use sun block, my dad has had skin lesions which he has burnt off. My physical medicine doctor who prescribed my 50,000UI of VIT D told me to continue with sunblock. I am fair skinned and wear it everyday (face, neck, sholders). I have heard concerns about it's chemicals, but I also know I run the risk of getting skin cancer. I am freckled and after 15 minutes can tell if I have had too much sun...
one of the other things about sunblocks is they do not all the sun rays (VIT D) get through your skin....VIT D everyone needs and A LOT of us are lacking
I have never used sunblock....the only place i do use it now is on my tattoos
nope, and I had my concerns when I got the sunburn when using it...
No, I think it was a case of the lesser of two evils lol.
Thanks for posting this thread, I did not know that this whole problem existed between sunblock and cancer, I was under the impression sun block was all good.

Possible link between ingredient in sunscreen and skin cancer: Schumer
LORE CROGHAN

There's mounting controversy about a possible link between an ingredient in many sunscreens and skin cancer.
The Food and Drug Administration has been sitting on possibly damning data from government research studies since July 2009, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.
One study found tumors and lesions developed up to 21% faster in lab animals coated with cream containing retinyl palmitate, a Vitamin A derivative that's in most of the 500 most popular sunscreens.
"If the product is doing more harm than good, people have a right to know - and the FDA must take action," Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters at Hudson River Park.
The beauty-products industry has called talk of a cancer link misleading and misguided. Schumer underscored that he's not recommending people stop using sunscreens. He has started checking the ingredient listings on sunscreen containers, though - and only uses sunscreen without retinyl palmitate, he said.
Did ur dr suggest which to be the best combo of ingredients? or an ingredient to avoid in them?

I never used sun block up until recently, we dont get much sun lol. I was DX a few weeks ago with Vitiligo (skin Depigmentation) in both hands so my GP said factor 40 on the hands.
