Syrinx

Sorry if not best topic choice, was closest. Pain in capelike fashion base of skull to lower scapula, bilateral. 5/10 Pain picks up again down lower back out to sides, down leg on L. Pain.5/10. Soles of feet burn/tingle. Other areas of back same burn/tingle. MRI with Syrinx T1-T8 again T10-L1 and disc herniation L4/L5. No tumor. Widest syrinx 4mm. Saw neurosurgeon, states incidental findings of syrinx, not related to pain. Hernia not surgical at this time.( I do have - straight leg raising) Severe arthritis. Recommended conservative rx. I'm okay with that but the tingling/burning seems unrelated to arthritis. Looking for assurance I do not need to be concerned with syrinx finding unless I somehow have worsening pain or other symptom. Any thoughts.

I had the first MRI of Thoracic region, without contrast. There was abnormal foci at T4 which was at the top of what they could see, in addition to the lower one. Radiologist suggested second MRI looking higher. Had MRI upper Thoracic, I'm guessing included cervical but not sure. With/Without contrast. That showed the rest of the upper syrinx. I do not have copies and do not have the written report findings. I am located in Iowa and found a Dr. Menezes who is on the medical board of the ASP foundation. As far as I know I don't have chiari malformation or tethered cord. I have been thinking about asking for a second opinion and going to Iowa City UIHC to see if Dr. Menezes would review findings and MRI studies.  Thanks.

Hi....u r in the right forum as syringomyelia is a related condition to chiari.
May I ask , have u had MRI's of ur brain w/wo contrast and of ur entire spine to rule out chiari and tethered cord?

I also must suggest u see a chiari specialist bcuz they also deal with syringomyelia on a regular basis.

Do u have copies of ur MRI and the reports?

Most with chiari /syringomyelia(syrinx) should be monitored by a chiari specialist.Only a dr that focuses his/her practice on these conditions can tell u how to proceed.

I hope u continue to post here an become an active member. It is a great place for info and support.

Please see our health pages for info.
