Hi and welcome. I use. Soft and hard neck brace. The soft one is to try to keep my head more stable as I sleep or as I read and do arts and crafts. It seems to to help with the muscles in my neck. It keeps them from getting tight. But as I'm trying new meds this month, i have put the soft neck brace to the side.

The hard neck brace is to keep my head stable as I go riding my horse. Though I promised to not ride him for at least a year or longer if all my doctors agree that surgery is needed to prevent a srinynx in my spinal column I only use it on long car rides.

I was born with mine. I never had head trauma that I can recall. My spine was injured during a fight but I don't think that has caused any premeant damage or caused my Chiari. I was born two month to early and the doctor used a suction cup to pull me out. So who knows.

I have been anemic for my whole life. My iron levels are always low as well as by wbc. But iI don't think it has an affect on my symptoms. Though I do have to be careful of my diet as I must not eat certain foods. I do take iron pills. I also got try avoid a simple cold as it will put me in the hospital for weeks. But here recentlyiI have been living a pretty healthy life.I don't get colds as often and I make sure iI stay on top of everything I eat. But once again I don't think it affects my Chiari. Or maybe it does but since I have been living 12 years with it I just chalked it up with other problems I have.

See though I was born with it. I never had symptoms until I was 15 after learning how to free dive. I had a blinding headache and was rushed to er. From that day on I had headaches that lasted longer and longer each year and every month. So if anemia affects Chiari I probably chalked it up ad I do with others problems I had over the past 12 years. I hope this helps you.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Chiari is a congenital condition that occurs in utero....it is not the result of cancer.

There is no limits on life expectations with Chiari alone....as it effects each of us differently....you will need more testing to see how your Chiari is affecting you and you over all health.

A neck brace may be helpful if you have cranial cervio instability...but not all of those with Chiari have it or are helped with a brace.

Some with Chiari do have other issues related or non related ...so we have to look at our families medical history as well as looking to see what all is  going on...those that have Ehlers-Danlos may have more of an issue with low levels of vitamins and minerals.....

We do have a list of anti inflammatory foods- http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Neurological-Disorders/Anti-inflammatory-Foods/show/1023?cid=186
