What is the problem with lifting weights and Chiari exactly?

sorry for making a double post but I was wondering why lifting something heavy can cause problems,
and what problems can lifting cause?

I am trying to get more in shape and be more healthy, I was trying to lose weight but doing cardio is not helping me at all. I work out daily and been doing it for almost 2 months and see no results.
I have always heard that lifting some  weights can be a great way to get in shape. But I am scared about it.

I tried lifting some small 8lb weights while doing a bike machine but my neck ended up hurting afterwards (could just be muscle pain only)

Does lifting something heavy make your chiari get worse? get bigger or something? or damage that area?
if I decided to lift, could I make my condition worse? or affect my walking or something?

I was wondering, if all that lifting does is make your symptoms worse then I wouldn't be so scared. but I am terrified of trying to do a machine at the gym or something and ending up really affecting my condition
(Sorry if this is a dumb question)

Let me start by asking do you get an increased headache when you cough, sneeze or laugh? Or eliminate waste?

These things cause an influx of blood and CSF to move faster thru an area that is too small causing headaches and other symptoms to increase even if just for a few moments....but it is there and painful at times....

When we strain we cause fluids to rush from our brain down our spine.....with Chiari there generally is an obstruction in the path of that fluid.

Do make sure you have be checked for an auto immune thyroid issue which could be a reason for your weight issues.....I do not lift weight and have lost weight and gained with no change to my daily activities or diet.....so I know it is more a thyroid issue for me.....

When I saw my Chiari specialist I was told no more then 5 lbs when lifting....but b4 surgery was told to try and avoid lifting, pulling or pushing any weight.....and of course post op as well....

I am now 6 yrs post op and can see I can now lift  more then 5 lbs....but I still have some residual issues when I do....but I do have other related conditions....so it is not due to my Chiari alone....

Walking, swimming and riding a recumbent bike would be better options for you as these were suggestions by my Dr.....and I loved the pool BUT could not swim in the regular way....I would walk around the pool as there is resistance from the water and when I swam, I did so on my back....this caused less stress on my neck....

Not knowing how constricted your cord is or if you have any disk issues or related conditions there is no way to know what going to the gym at this point would  do to your condition....

Just be careful. I have been moving for the past two days. Trying to not over do anything. When I get tired I would rest. But moving in two days isn't easy especially when we only have four people and two others cant lift more than 15 lbs. It has been crazy none the less. Now I wish I would of quit earlier then what I did. Everything is hurting and no medication is helping. My neck and head are worse. Just listen to your body. You don't want to face a headache that many of us do.

Have you had the CINE MRI, full spine MRI and testing for ALL related conditions?

The increase in headaches is just one symptom we can have with Chiari when straining.....and there are others like dizziness...balance issues, vision issues....

To know for sure if it would have an effect on you and your overall health more testing should be done.....if you have a syrinx, that can cause you to not feel certain things....so, it could mask some issues from Chiari....so do seek out a true Chiari specialist and have more testing....a syrinx or Syringomyelia can lead to perm nerve damage if left untreated....so it is important to know what all is going on

no, I never get headaches. almost never. I don't suffer from headahces. probably never get them.

It is just my neck that hurts after lifting the 8lb weights. my neck area feels tender. It made me wonder about the chiari and made me wonder if lifting would make me sick or end up not being able to walk or something

I forgot to mention, I would never do any really heavy lifting. I would never push myself

but It worried me that something as small ias 8lb weights would make my neck hurt.
I was hoping to lift something like  at least 20-30 pounds (nothing more than that)
