complications of Chiari maiformation 1 or 2 in giving birth

What complications could there be for me giving natural birth to my baby. I was diagnosed with type 1 when I was 10 after routine MRI after suffering headaches - which did not continue.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

First, if u have 2 surgeries for chiari,...do not wait for ur OBGYN to tell u IF they will do a C-section...TELL them u require one...if they do not work with u get a diff OBGYN!

U can not have the strain of natural child birth as it can affect u....

There are books co written by Dr Oro and Diane Mueller -

Pregnancy and Chiari Malformation with or with out syringomyelia. by Diane Mueller, ND, RN, C-FNP

I have had two Chiari surgeries and now have some mild bulging disc. I am 7 months pregnant and my doctors will not tell me if they will perfom a c-section. I have no idea what would be the safest delivery option and I cannot find information/research to present to my docotrs. Please help Jen

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Since u know u have chiari and r lucky enuff to be asymptomatic u deff want to discuss this with ur GYN , but there is a NP that has done several conferences on this topic and highly suggests a C section bcuz the strain of natural childbirth can trigger ur symptoms.

I will find the info on this topic and PM (private message it to both of u)

Hey there!  I actually did not have any signs or symptoms until I delivered my daughter.  My neurologist believes that labor actually caused me to be symptomatic. I have my appointment with the neurosurgeon this afternoon and one of my questions for him is just that.  If we decide to have another baby, is a c-section our only option?!  I will let you know what he says!

(Please know - this was just my case - and yours maybe different...  but definetely something you need to talk with your neurologist/neurosurgeon and OB about prior to reaching that full time mark in your pregnancy!!)

Good question though!!
