post op decompression

My son had a decompression surgery a week ago and some of his symptoms seem to have got worse. He had trouble be fore the surgery swolling which would then make him vomit, dizziness,  headaches,  sleep apnea and slured speech.  Since his surgery his speech has got worse and he can barly swallow food without choking and vomiting.  The doctors are going to put him on something for the dizziness but say everything else should get better in time. Has anyone else had this happen after surgery and if so did it get better?

I was more interested if they found Syringomyelia or tethered cord...or evidence of Chiari II.
It is possible that they took out too much bone or not enuff.....too much can cause cerebral ptosis..or brain slump....not enuff well there is still not enuf room and the same issues remain.....

When does he go to get his stitches/staples out?

Yes his spine was MRId no stenosis.  I'm thinking since the doctor only took out a piece of the skull and didn't do any kind of shrinking of the tonsils maybe this is the problem. I'm just so fearful this surgery isn't going to of benefited him and seeing him living with theses symptoms is heartbreaking.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I am sorry to hear your son is feeling worse post op instead of better....most feel much better post op and  refer it to feeling "normal" again....but it can be short lived....and some symptoms tend to return around 3 months as the nerves begin to heal.

The issues your son is having are not typical for post op recovery. Have his tongue checked to see if he has thrush, which is not uncommon after  a surgery where the patient is intubated.

Another possibility is related conditions not known b4 surgery that may be flaring up.....was his complete spine MRI'd?

Outside the sleep apnea and Chiari was he DX'd with anything else?
