I have Type 2 chiari with a 7mm herniation, and a syrinx. I diagnosed myself. That is, I was having many, many symptoms, but my doc. never took me seriously - so I DEMANDED an MRI. I knew something was wrong with me, but for 2 years, my doc said, it's anxiety, it's migranes, it's this, it's that. Blah, blah blah! Finally, I told my doc - look either you give me an MRI to find out what is growning in my head or I will wreck my car into a tree and get an MRI of my head in the ER - she finally ordered it.
They found the chiari - then sent me to a neurologist. My neurologist thought that it was serious enough to send me to a neurosurgeon. However, when I saw him, he told me that my chiari was small, nothing to worry about, and A-symptomatic.
Ok, maybe it is small, but it is not a-symptomatic, for crying out loud I knew it was there! I knew something was "growing" inside my head - I thought (because of the headaches) that I had a tumor. Thank god I was wrong, but the point is, this was not an accidental finding which would indicate A-symptomatic.
So I saw a specialist. Dr. Bejjani, he also told me that I do not have symptoms from Chiari. I don't understand. I had a list of symptoms from headaches, to numbness, even nystagmus (you can't fake bouncing eyes). But yet again, not Chiairi! What?
So here is my question, do you think I am being pushed aside because I have medical assistance (welfare insurance)? Do you think that if I have more than 10 symptoms that disrupt my daily living, that I should seek surgery? What do I do? Who do I see?
Please help.
