Many thyroid patients have high cholesterol. There seems to be a particular problem with lipids being utilised in the body when there is thyroid disease.
You also need to be aware. having 'high' cholesterol is a misnomer. Meaning, that there is a total cholesterol on the tests and many doctors jump too soon. There are good cholesterols and bad ones. Did you know your ear wax is cholesterol? Our bodies need some cholesterol to maintain our organs.
You need to ask for the HDL, and LDL totals. It's the HDL which is the good stuff and the LDL which is the bad stuff. If your thyroid levels are off, then you may well be having issues with cholesterol.
There are many ways to reduce cholesterol and obviously diet and exercise are the most beneficial. (though not always!)
It can also be that it runs in your family. For me personally, I had so called high cholesterol, did the natural way of reducing it, 3 months later it was only 0.01 less! I was shocked. Being vegetarian (at the time) and super fit, it was not nice to know my body was letting me down! I looked into my family history and found many of my family members past and present have/had cholesterol issues and out of at least 10 only 1 has thyroid issues.
Everyone's bodies are different. A Hyper patient can have 'high' cholesterol too!
Maybe you should give a copy of this to your doctor.

Beyond that does your doctor know that what tests to run to determine your thyroid status and whether you are being medicated properly? If you will please post your thyroid test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report, then members can help interpret and advise.
Mine was too and I started doing Benefiber, and that seems to help with my Cholesterol...You use it in clear or hot liquids with two TSP three time a day...Try it and let me know in how it works....
