Hi. The IV Fluid therapy is extremely important and will be an important indication of whether the high blood numbers can be brought down or not. It is the first line of treatment - and an essential one. Ideally, there should be 3 days of IV Fluids, as this gives the best possible chance of getting the blood values down.
Upon coming home, you should then start giving SubQ fluids, under the direction of your vet. This should continue for at least a month and maybe longer.
Blood tests should be undertaken after one week, then at 3 weeks and then 3 weeks after that. Keep a copy of all the blood results and post them here.
The fluids will take at least a few days to have an effect, so don't expect miracles straight away. It is also not uncommon for the blood values to deteriorate slightly, before improving, so be prepared for that if it happens.
If your dog rallies and the fluids have the effect we would like to see, then there's lots that can be done to improve both quality and quantity of life. Get back as soon as the IV Fluids have been done - or before if you have questions.
Fingers crossed!
Tony
