Platelet Count

I just got blood tests. My total platelets are 57. That's awful low isn't it?? I don't have a liver doctor.

Ditto what the others said. I have advanced cirrhosis and gotto SVR but platelets won't budge; they still hover around 50-85. They are not worried unless they get lower than 40-50.

I agree. You should see a liver doctor but if it takes too long to get in, an Internist should work for now. There's not much they can do to bring them up but you need to find out why they are low. Mine were 65 for a long time but I did treatment and they went up to 84, where they have stayed for a few months now. I felt no different when they were 65. My hep doctor said they don't really worry until they get down to around 35. He also told me they would not go back up due to my cirrhosis but he was wrong. I've also heard of people who go back up to normal after treatment. Take care.

A normal platelet count typically ranges from about 150,000 to 450,000 depending upon the lab where the blood test was taken. When the number of platelets is low (called thrombocytopenia), you are at risk of bleeding more easily than a healthy person.

Such a low platelet count can be dangerous in itself. More importantly such a low platelet count is usually an indication of an underlying medical conditions. One condition that can cause such a low platelet count is advanced cirrhosis. Advanced cirrhosis is a serious medical condition which needs proper medical care as it can be a life-threatening illness if not managed properly.

The cause for your low platelet count should be diagnosed by a doctor and treated if possible. At minimum you should be under the care of a doctor, as just having such a low platelet count can be dangerous to your health.

Please make an appointment with a doctor and get the help you need.
