I wouldn't completly rule out meds as a possable future option if you really need them, but I would first try talk therapy and some life style changes first and see where that takes you.

To improve your self image lifting weights and doing lots of cardio in the gym can help a lot. You just start slow and work your way up. When you start to see changes in your body then the mind can often follow.

I use body building to keep my self image up. It doesn't help my severe depression and it's hard to do when you feel depressed, but I force myself to do it 4 days a week and it does help.

There are many different types and severities of depression.
From what you wrote it sounds like your depression (if thats what it is) may be very mild and situational.

If you were suffering from Major depression then you would know. Major depression at the moderate to severe level is beyond tormenting. You can't work, you can't eat, can't sleep, can not have fun, and simply become a prisoner in your own head to the point where your own death makes you feel warm and good inside.

Most often Major depression comes with severe anxiety with is also just as bad and even worse than the disease itself.

Don't confuse a down time in your life with Major depression. The difference is huge.

You may want to try some counsoling, but I advise against trying meds. People with mild depression tend not to do well on antidepressants.
