First off, why would you bother to go to the doctor, get a known SSRI that is not addictive and known to have few to no side effects, and then not take the medication?

What are scared of exactly? This is a proven med that can be discontinued with no withdrawal on a moment's notice. I feel strongly about this because I nearly died due to not taking my Xanax prescription after a doctor's visit resulted in a high suspicion of hyperthyroidism, despite several normal blood tests. I refused to take the meds because my Mother had been hooked on all sorts of depressants when I was a kid, causing us to think she had mental illness. I didn't want to take the same drugs.

So I didn't, had a thyroidic storm, nearly died, then learned that not only my Mom, but every blood member of my family had/has thyroid disease in one form or another. Please - don't make the mistake(s) I've already made.

A professional therapist may help some as well. A "vent" or "outlet" for clearly discussing why you feel so depressed could be very, very helpful.

What is your "exercise" level? Do you make an appointment with yourself, for yourself, 30 minutes 4 times a week to take a brisk walk alone? This may sound stupidly simple, but it has helped a great many, myself included, deal with anxiety and depression. If you haven't tried this, try it today. Tell the family Mom has an appointment for herself for awhile, and get out for a brisk walk. This WILL help, and help immediately I think.

You get your life back by doing a few things 1. admitting you've got a problem (you're doing that-but your general physician needs to know too) 2. Learning about what's wrong with you because knowledge is power and 3. Fighting back - hard. Life's not a cupcake, but a journey of challenges to face, overcome, and be left stronger for the adversity. In short, you get your life back by 'taking it back", just like a war.

I hope this helps, and wish you the Best in Health.

Hi TinaR10!
I am so sorry to read about your situation. As tough as it is to do, and as hard as they are to find...for me anyway, if there is someone in your life (a friend, close relative...), in whom you can trust and are able to confide in, share with them!!!
Or, talk to your doctor about setting you up with a good "qualified" counselor. One that will listen, understand, but most of all "care!!!"
I am not a big fan of meds, but sometimes that may be what it takes (meds prescribed by your physician), to get you over some of those hurdles you face.
I admire your courage for seeking help TinaR10, I really do!!! Just be sure that the advice you take, is cleared by your doc first and foremost!!!
I truly wish you all the best!!!

This pranayam will help you naturally, to get over the depression and the side effects. There is nothing to fear.In a few weeks you notice the benefit,  and then come back to report your progress. You will get your life back in a very positive way.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Kapalbhati pranayam -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 21  times.

No amount of "therapy" will EVER help a diseased gland or malfunctioning body part. Yes, people overcome amputations, and all kinds of physical challenges, but you simply cannot overcome "disease" with therapy.

Most people we come into contact with that are family members/close friends of those with thyroid disease have a very hard time understanding the challenges we face. Until you've been "flattened against the wall, unable to move" with a thyroidic storm ready to send you to the hospital, you have no idea what clinical anxiety is all about.

It's our job - to tell them.

ANY untreated illness will break you down in dozens of other parts of your body. I have very serious sinus and skin problems from being untreated for so long. Depression is a natural part of thyroid disease and clinical anxiety, I mean - you feel bad all the time how in the heck can you NOT be depressed? It's impossible.

Tina - TAKE YOUR MEDS, they will help, and you deserve to feel as good as medical science can make you feel. I am glad you have the fighting spirit, because we've got a LOT of education to do.

therese83 - don't experiment anymore with dropping the meds. Why? I could see that from a macho man, the kind that says (like I did for years) "I don't need anything to help me, I'll just drop these meds and their cost like a bad habit." Only to kill themselves a week later. Forget that. You have clinical depression, not a death sentence.

Let's all realize that and begin to fight back with the truth - especially to our Docs!

I have a very good life now , on a low dose of anti depressant.  I take the medication, without it I am a shriveling, heaving mess of anxiety, who cant sleep and is so so negative.

?

No amount of psychotherapy has helped me, I truly believe it is a problem with my brain.
I take the medication, I see the results.  Untreated Depression leads to other illnesses and in some cases self harm.

I forget about the medication, I dont think about it.  Once a year I try to give it up and I fall back in depression.
