10 year old basset

We've had Molly to the vet twice in the past 2 weeks because of a fever and her refusal to eat. After 9 days on antibiotics she is still running a temp of 102- 103.3 still not eating on her own except for an occasional treat.any suggestions? She had blood work done and the the vet said everything looked good.

Hi. So ... low BUN means what the vet said was wrong ... everything was NOT good. Low BUN usually indicates a liver, blood vessel (around the liver) or intestinal disease problem. A low BUN should certainly have alarmed the vet and encouraged them to undertake further tests to identify why it was happening. Easy in hindsight, I know, but that first vet really let you down saying everything was good.

I am so sorry you got this sad news.  Glad you went to another Vet for a second consult.
I have not used Tumeric but do know many are using it in dogs with cancer.  If you do a search on the Internet, I think there is a Yahoo dog group I used to frequent and there was a lot of discussion about Tumeric.

As for diet, use a good quality protein foid and stay away from grains.  You can try feeding her tripe, which most will eat and is nourishing.  The fresh can stink but they sell it canned now.  You can also add some sardines or calf liver.

Hope she will be comfortable.  Good luck

Hi. I'm sorry for the bad news you have received. I don't understand how the vet could have originally said the blood test results looked good, given the tumors?

I have never used tumeric myself for my dogs, but I have heard of others using it. It does have some interesting qualities, but shrinking tumors I'm not so convinced about - though it can reduce inflammation. It is vital you ensure your vet is aware of what you may be planning in using tumeric, because there are great dangers with it (it thins the blood, so overdosing is a big risk with potential health complications).

Well the news is not good.. Molly has tumors in both lungs and chest as per X-rays. New vet added another antibiotic (Baytril) and prednisone.to keep her comfortable. She let me spoon feed her wet dog food last night. Is anyone out there familiar with giving turmeric to dogs for shrinking tumors?

Hi. The slightly elevated temperature means infection or inflammation somewhere, including reactions to ingested poisons.

Has Molly recently been vaccinated or received booster injections? Fever is a common reaction. Do you know if Molly has eaten something she shouldn't, such as macadamia nuts or human medicines, which can raise a dog's temperature dramatically?

There must be something that is being missed
by your vet(?) dogs DO NOT just run a high
fever for no reason, nor do they stop eating.
Perhaps you should consult another vet or
ask your vet now to do an ultra sound or a
X-ray for futher information?
