Five Years Old and dead in 3 Weeks

My border collie was five years old this past November.  He was perfect, never sick, full of energy.  On December 4th he threw up, stopped eating for 8 days, was hospitalized and on IV fluids, hardly ate anything unless force fed and then died on December 21st of respiratory failure.  Has anyone ever heard of such a thing.

That's so sad. I am very sorry for your loss. I empathise totally, having lost my own 12 yr old lurcher, BB, also in November. It's heartbreaking losing our best friends. Although my own dog didn't show any symptoms of her 4th stage kidney failure until the last week of her life, she then deteriorated so quickly it has left me in total shock. We thought (like you) we would have each other for a few more years - but it wasn't meant to be. Throughout her life she was like my shadow, always with me, and now I feel quite lost without her at my side.

Hope you remember your little man for the happy albeit short life he had. And please talk about him here - I'm often online and would love to read more about him, if you want to share your memories. Big hug, Tony

I am wondering how could he have this done now that the dog has died. I lost my dog in a matter of a day and am not sure why.

I thought I was the only one who loses a young dog on this site! Holy Cow, your story is worst than mine, because I knew I had a sick dog for years, but thought I was doing everything right. Your dog seemed healthy and within days he went from fine to dying. I know the loss is crushing. I started writing about Jack, which you may read my journal if you like. I'm very sorry for your loss and try not to blame yourself, which you will, but that is all part of grief. I believe dogs go to heaven, so I have to keep paying forward in life, helping others, so I can really be in heaven, with my family and my dogs :) Mark

No you won't ... how could you possibly forget a friend that meant so much. In time, you will be able to remember happier times and experiences shared. But for now, like me, you are probably grieving and just feeling sad. Things will get better, eventually. Hope 2012 is a better year for you. Tony

His kidneys were starting to show signs of trouble as well, but not for another week from the first time I took him to the vet.  Thanks for your post.

I don't think this was a blockage at all; I've gone through that twice already. The first thing that comes to mind is poisoning; that would be a real possibility. Kidney failure could have also caused this to happen ( I lost a 4 year old to kidney disease) although the labs would have shown that to be the cause without any difficulty. If your dog got ahold of antifreeze or a piece of sugarfree gum, either of those would have killed him that quickly.

I'm really sorry you have lost such a young dog; that really too bad.

Was your dog outside, could someone have fed him something he shouldn't have? There are alot of crazy people out there. That happened to my grandfather's dog, someone gave him food and poisoned him on purpose which he found out later after a sudden death. Sorry for you loss!

He may have swallowed something that blocked his intestines. Check through  your local Dept. of  Agriculture they have a Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System that can give you the answer as to what really happened. Their services usually cost about $30.00.

Sorry for your loss.   Just lost my dog too.  Were your dogs kidney values in normal ranges?  What part of the US are you in? And what did the Vets say ?
