I just felt lumps on my Golden Retriver

Today I had noticed that our Golden Retriver was limping on his back right leg, we know that he is older and felt that since the temps outide were in the single digits, his hips must be bothering him. Tonight I was noticing that he was having not only a difficult time getting up from a laying position, but also getting into a sitting or laying position...I got down on the floor with him and started feeling around his back leg, and came accross what I felt to be a large rolling lump just inside his leg close to the bend up high closer to his groin, he really acted like it didn't bother him for me to mess with it, he actually lifted that leg as if he wanted me to, then he layed down and about 8-9" higher I felt another one only slightly smaller and on his lower stomach, then my son was rubbing on his back close to the shoulder blades, and found another one...I am truly worried, I read here that Golden's have VERY high instances of cancer, and I know I have to get him to the vet, but I am so scared that my worries will be confirmed, is it possible that it could be somethig else other than cancer?

Hi, most likely they are fatty tissue.  We had same concern with our yellow lab, he is 6 years old.  These fatty lumps are very common in dogs and most of the time that is what they are.  You should have them looked at though, doctor can stick a needle in them and determine right away.  This is not painful to doggy.  If one of them looks suspicious, they can biopsy it.  If they feel squishy most likely fat.  If they are hard or continues to grow, could be cancerous.  Our pup had one removed on his right front leg a couple years ago, as it was cancerous.  But we caught in time and now we just monitor him and make sure we check him out when a new one appears.

The way you describe them they do sound like benign lipomas but best to get them checked out, just in case.  The can pop up quickly too - within less than a week after my dachshund had 7 removed another popped up.  sigh.

Fingers and paws crossed for benign.

Thank you...The lumps are soft and perfectly round, and they roll around...We are taking him in to have them checked, he does not apear to be in any pain, just seems stiff in his hind quarters...I'm also hoping they are benign...

It could be lipomas (a benign fatty tumor) - we just had 7 removed from my 10-year old dachshund.  We too were very worried they were cancerous but all turned out to be benign.  Of course you can't tell for sure until they are removed.  They are more cosmetic than anything but now we know for certain.  Okay, she looks like Frankenstein's dachshund but they weren't cancer.

Two of her spots were right by her hind legs like you have described.  I'm hoping for the same benign results for you and your Goldie.
