What do you feed?

What do you feed?

Just curious, what do you feed and why?

I feed Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken.  We just switched to this a few months ago.  They use all human food grade ingredients, nothing artificial, and their suppliers are all domestic with the exception of the Lamb, which comes from New Zealand.  It's not out of reach financially, and with 3 large breed dogs, that's important!

It's made a tremendous difference in their coats, as well and a decrease in the problems they used to have with intermittent diarrhea.

I'll have to check into that type. I've never heard of it. With all of the scares out there, sounds like a great one to try. I've stuck with what the original owner's fed my dog as a puppy, Pedigree. She has the adult/complete nutrition now-hard dog food. But we add a pouch of the wet dog food chunks also from pedigree to the hard. We've tried changing her to others and even did the whole thing where you start with 1/4 of new dogfood, then slowly advance to full amount. She would always get bad diarrhea and a few made her itchy and needing a steroid from the vet. So, I just stuck to the old standby. LOL. Thanks for sharing your info with me.

How much is it compared to Science Diet or Iams? And do they have any kind of sensative stomach brand?

I'm debating switching my own food. Right now, my beagle is on Science Diet Sensative Stomach. Unfortunately she goes through stretches where she can't hold down the food and vomits it back up. The Sensative Stomach seems to work better than their normal food, but it's still not 100%.

My concern though is I've heard it's not good to switch up the food for a dog. I have no idea if that's a Marketing ploy or not, but I've heard it a few times. She's been on it for 5 years now, so if that's a legit concern, I need to consider it.

Hi everyone,

I'm with you "live4fitness" - my dogs LOVE Purina One!  Their coats have improved and they seem to have a lot more energy.  I used to feed them Iams, which was OK.  However, since we switched to Purina, we've actually seen an improvement.  Never thought I'd be discussing dog food!!

Is anyone else as angry as I am about this pet food debacle?  I realize this is a freak thing, but wouldn't you think the FDA or whoever would be able to test all the foods by now?

Jack

The Hund N Flocken is $21 for a 15 lb bag, and $39 for a 33lb. bag.  They have other types of food, this one is lamb and barley.  I don't think they specifically have a product for sensitive tummies, though.  With our 2 Dobes and a Great Dane, the 33 lb bag has lasted almost 2 weeks.

I've always fed Purina, and never had a problem until several months ago when 2 of the boys began having skin/coat issues, and intermittent diarrhea.  So I've switched them all.  So far, so good.

You don't want to be constantly changing foods, but if something isn't working for you, talk to your vet about possibly changing to something else.

I'm really upset about the petfood thing and the more I hear, the more I'm not sure it's a freak thing. Essentially a lot of the food production is outsourced to China and there's no regulations on it. I was listening to one report, and it was like Slaughterhouse 5 all over again, but with petfood instead of human food. I was stunned at what they were saying. The thing that concerns me the most is it hit the entire range of foods, including the "high" end ones like Science Diet and Iams. It just shows it's a production issue.

You're right to be angry!  I'm angry too!

No one has a complete list of ALL the foods that are banned.  I went to the AVMA site and they point to Menufoods.com - however this list is only for Menu Foods products.  Then they offer two other links on their website - one to Purina and one to DelMonte.

The Menu Foods website points to the FDA for a "complete list" then when I go to the FDA they point to the Menu Foods website for a "complete list" and it just becomes stupid to keep bouncing back and forth.  Is it really THAT difficult for either the AVMA or the FDA to complile one list that is all inclusive and then update it regularly?

No one seems to know how many dogs and cats have been and will be affected by this poisoned food.  It's been over a week since this story broke, you'd think SOMEBODY would have this information by now!

I hope the FDA has finally been able to test every dog and cat food product on the shelf, but I'm afraid I'm being overly optimistic!

Jack

Breaking news
March 31, 2007
Nestle Purina PetCare Company has announced that it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans, and 6-,8-,12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. Look for this information on the bottom of individual cans, or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Purina's 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16th.

No Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall, including ALPO Prime Cuts dry.

Our dog love Beneful Healthy Weight. His coat looks great, he never has gas, and it keeps him from getting too chunky. When we got him he was overweight and our kids and their people food sharing didn't help. We have since cut his people food consumption to zero and kept him on his diet of Beneful and he is down to 74.5 lbs. He looks like a svelt border collie (he is mixed with black lab, too) now rather than a chunky boy!

We do not offer moist food, but we do treat with a milkbone here and there as well as the occasional pig's ear or peanut butter stuffed kong.
