funny you should ask.  I took my beagle to the vet this morning to check her ears too.  There is a product my vet gave me called Vet Solutions ear cleansing solution which cleans, dries, and acidifies the ear canal (acidification is important to stop yeast infections).  He said you can also buy all sorts of similar solutions at Petco or PetsMart.  I opted to just buy his stuff since I didn't have time to run to the "goodie" store (in my dog's mind).  You squirt it into the ear (keeping it out of the eyes), massage the ear, and clean any excess away with cotton ball or tissue paper.  You can do it 2-3x a day.  I'd suggest you get some and start your dog on it asap.  (I'm guessing you can also get it in the pet section of any grocery store too).   My beagle hates it (hates anyone messing with her face) but my dachshund loves it and has been begging for me to "do it again" all afternoon.  (Crazy kids)

If that doesn't do the trick, you can try Tresaderm - also available from your vet.  Dogs with floppy, rather than pointy, ears tend to have this kind of trouble.  We've gotten in a route of gently swabbing the ear out with a Q-tip about once every 6 weeks.  It must be working since we've had no further ear issues with the flop-eared mutt.  :-)

Thanks for your reply had my dog to the vet and got him sorted this evening at last the vet gave him a physical and examined him thoroughly, he gave him tonic and got the usual other things done. Then it came to his ear and because the dog was  afraid for him to touch his ear he had to tie a piece of lace around his snout really tight and back around his neck to examine him, my dog so was so distressed he looked like he couldnt breath and his tongue was turning purple while he was examining him, he cleaned it out and put some special ear fluid into it which I later bought. So I think his ear should clear up totally later , the poor thing, i bought him some toys to make him feel better.

My Lab had the same problem.  I just kept getting the vet to clean his ears every month or so because it was easier for the vet to do it.  Some dogs, especially those with floppy ears and who like water, have the infection chronically. The vet also gave us some cream to use--it was hard to get in--but it worked. I forgot the name.
