Gym exercises with ankle injury

Is it safe to go to the gym with a mild to moderate ankle injury, after a few days rest since the initial injury, as long as you don't do any free weight exercises and stick to upper body resistance, an exercises and rowing machines or cross trainers for cardio?

Of course, if you can walk on it then fire away. I would stay away from all cardio, all cardio will involve movement at the ankle joint. As for for upper body resistance training i think your best using isolation training eg seated bicep curls. This way there's no tension around the ankle area
