Lebers Congenital Amourosis, treatment of, and retinal and macular scarring

by misst_dwn, Apr 27, 2007 12:00AM
My five month old will be tested in June for an eye disease called Lebers Congenital Amourosis.  He was refered to an optomologist by his pediatrician because of nystagmus.  When the optomologist dilated his eyes he said that he saw scarring on both his macular and his retina, and that his pupils were sluggish.
I have researched some on the possible treatments for LCA if he is diagnosed, but I cannot find any information on the scars inside his eye, what were they caused by, is there anyway to fix them, do we remove the scars, or leave them alone would scars like this affect  vison in a normal eye.
Aside from the nystagmus, sluggish pupils, and very low vison (we believe that he does have light perception) he seems to be right on track as far a physical growth and achievements, he also smiles as any other baby would so we don't have any fear of neurological problems.
Also I know that LCA affects the cones and rods in the eye but I do not know if the disease damages them, or if they are missing all together.  And is anyone out there replacing cones and rods in the eye.   Any information that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

cannot remove any retinal acarring.  whatever scarring is back there must and will remain for life.

cannot replace rods or cones or any retinal structures.  what he's got...he's got.  so it doesnt really matter if they are 'missing' or 'damaged' b/c its un-repairable.

LCA does not involve 'missing' rods and cones, it involves abnormal development of them.  he has them, they just dont work.

when he gets a little older he'll need a thorough low vision evaluation.
