Poked eye or eyelash problem (could be either)

More than 24 hours ago I accidently poked myself in the eye with my fingernail. The pain mostly went a way for a little while, but when I woke up it was burning, stinging and watering, and when I looked in the mirror there was an eyelash in there, but as far as I know I didn't get it out, and all day and night the burning and stinging and watering have not gone away, and I am sure if the pain is from the poke or because the eyelash is stuck in there somewhere. What should I do? Is there anything I can do to help it myself?

dont go to a GP for any eye problem.  an optometrist or ophthalmologist would be much better.

pink eye may or may not need antibiotics, depending on what kind of "pink eye" it is.  TRUE "pink eye", the kind that is contagious (i'm talking about EKC here), is VIRAL and NO antiobiotics will help.

if you are not a contact lens wearer, a scratch is usually no big deal.  the large ones can be difficult to manage, but a large one causes pretty severe pain that it sounds like you are not having.

I agree with christie.  A scratched cornea should definitely be looked at by a GP or primarily an ophthalmologist.  Scratched cornea's are proned to infection and can seriously and permanently affect your vision.

It could be simply irritated from rubbing which can be helped by using over the counter eye drops.

Another condition, conjunctivitis, also know as pink eye could be a possibility.  An antibiotic eye drop is neccessary for treatment of this condition.

If it is a scratched cornea, it will usually heal within 1-3 days.  Your doc or opt. will prescribe you some antibiotic drops to keep the eye from being infected as well as a medicine to help dialate the pupil which in turn aids in the healing process.  I would also suggest wearing uv eyeglasses when out in the sun or in bright light to help protect it from further irritation.

At any rate, eye problems should be evaluated for proper treatment and to prevent damage to the pupil and or permanent damage to your vision.  I would suggest seeing a specialist like i mentioned.

Good luck.

You could have a mild corneal abrasion, or scratch from the fingernail.  It would be a good idea to go to an eye doctor.
