monofocal model concern

Decided to go with a monofocal iol and had asked my doctor what brand/model would be used. He said an AMO SI 40, but then remarked I was diabetic. I am not. He caught his mistake, but after returning home, I did some research and discovered that particular iol is used in patients over 60 and mostly for diabetics. I'm only 50. Should I worry? Thanks in advance.

Most IOL's are labled for use to treat aphakia in patients who are 60 years of age and older and have had a cataractous lens removed. Since IOL's are the main modality to treat and replace the cataractous lens, surgeons implant them in people of all ages, ranging from trauma to even pediatric cataracts. Of course many diabetics have them as well as do patients with various types of pathology. Diabetics just have a greater risk of other work needed in the future such as laser of vessels on the retina that can bleed and other types of retinal work. The SI-40 is a silicone lens which is a later model of silicone that has been used since 1989.There are well over a million implanted since that time manufactured by AMO and other companies. They are still widely used. Some surgeons use acrylic in diabetics but that is strictly their call. You can find artilces that debate both sides. My mother and step mother are both implanted with the SI-40 and are doing fine. It has been over eight to ten years since their surgery. Hope that helps.
