How long to wait for bleeding to stop before a vitrectomy?

by monty878, Mar 13, 2009 09:46AM
I am 61 and have always been severely near sighted.  I had laser surgery 7 years ago and it was very successful.  A month ago I noticed a number of specks in vision of my right eye and went to a retinal specialist and he lasered a retinal tear.  A couple of days later a bunch of blood entered the vitreous and completely blocked the vision in my right eye.  The doctor can’t see where the blood came/comes from to laser it.  It hasn’t gotten any worse or better in the last 3 weeks.  I sometimes think I see “poofs” new blood swirling around so I think the bleeding hasn’t stopped.  The doctor showed my how to detect a retinal detachment so I am periodically doing that check.  How long should I wait for the vision to clear/bleeding to stop, before considering a vitrectomy?  Thanks

It varies. You should be under the care of a retina Eye MD. He/she will make the determination and there are many reasons why recommendations goes one way or the other.
