Risk of RD after cataract surgery

Risk of RD after cataract surgery

How does risk of RD after cataract surgery work?  Specifically, does the level of risk remain the same year-to-year following the surgery?  Does the risk increase year-to-year following surgery?  Or does risk decrease given a greater length after surgery?  Thank you, kindly

The most accepted theory of why cataract surgery increases the risk of RD is that the human lens is much thicker than an implant, when the cataract is removed and the IOL put in the vitreous moves forward creating traction on the retina.

Overall the risk of RD in non-operated  people is about 1 in 5000 but after cataract surgery its more like one in 500 to 1000

This risk is highest in the first couple years after surgery and declines after that but its always higher than people that have not had cataract surgery.
