I have felt very privileged my whole life to be a physician, I am the first physician in my family. It is a noble profession and one I'm proud to belong to. It makes me sad and angry when a very few physicians fail to meet the standards we set for outselves. In my opinion Dr. Harbin's book: Waking Up Blind" is a testimony to a noble physician not willing to let a university and the profession of ophthalmology brush over and hide a terrible breech of the public's faith in physicians policing their profession.

The book continues to resonate. Just last week I participated in Grand Rounds at the University of Kansas Department of Ophthalmology on Dr. Harbin's book. Everyone agrees that the surgeon involved should have been permanently removed from Medicine and exposure to patients and medical trainees. That he is a tenured professor of ophthalmology at a Texas medical school and was awarded a honor by the Cornea Society recently makes me violently ill.  Also that Emory University needs to make a public apology for the mess and publically commend Drs. Gammon and Campbell. Perhaps if the public raises enough fuss with Emory they will. I  just wrote a letter to the President of the Board of Emory University asking them to do just that.
