left sided abdominal pain

Hi, I'm hoping you will be able to help me. I have been experiencing left sided abdominal pain which goes into the small of my back. I also have alternating diaorhhea and constipation, more of the former along with a lot of gas. Mu GP seems to think that this is IBS but I am beginnign to wonder if it is something morew sinister as it has been going on for at least three months. I also feel as if I need to empty my bowels a lot of the time. Thank you nfo reading this - I am a 59 year olf worried female.

Jennie, if your doc hasn't done any testing, go in with a request to have some done. Make sure you get some standard blood tests done and then consider asking for a colonoscopy. I know it's something that most people avoid, but when you have alternating bowel habits and pain that is radiating, you need to get this checked out. If you haven't changed a lot - diet, added or taken away meds, haven't been sick, etc - it's time to be more proactive.
