Blockage

My husband is 40 years old and has been told that he has a thrombosis/blockage in his Superior Messentary Vein.  He has been sick for almost 3 years and no one can not give us any answers.  He was in the hospital for 6 solid mths. and in and out the other 2 1/2 years. He went from a 180-185lb Captain at a Fire Station to a 82lb man that had to retire his career after 23 years of serving in the Fire Dept--not only his career/job, but his hobby! He has not been able to gain any weight without a TPN line--which I am very concerned with being that eventually what will become of his kidneys. My questions.....WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE OR CAN BE DONE FOR THIS THROMBOSIS???....if we have a blockage in our heart, doctors don't just leave it there because we have had the blockage for a while....they have to do something....why would this blockage be any different??? He is still very malnourished, with no muscle mass at all. WE REALLY WANT SOMEONE TO HELP US!!!!...we have two awesome little boys and we would love to have our husband/dad back...CAN YOU HELP??

Baby, one of the reasons the docs may be hesitating is that this condition has a high level of mortality, and that the operation may not be that easy to accomplish. Go to emedicine.com, sign in and read about superior mesenteric artery thrombosis. You need to understand all that's involved before you push for the surgery. Then, if he's willing to undertake the surgery, find a specialist in the field. This is an operation that should not be performed by those who are unfamiliar with the condition.

If you want help, you're going to have to push to get it. But you also need to understand the risks. In the meantime, ask about using TPN to get more nutrition, or another form of supplementary nutrition.
