What About Recovery After Sigmoid Colectomy

My GI doctor says I need to have a "sigmoid colectomy" because my current round of diverticulitis simply won't calm down or go away, and it's my 4th or 5th case of diverticulitis.  He says it's urgent -- because my bowel is so weakened that it could "pop" at any time, and then the cure would be much worse, if not life-threatening.

So, since I plan to fly from Hawaii to the mainland to do this, how long should I plan?  My niece (a doc) says at least 2 weeks just to meet the surgeon and set up for the surgery.  But how long do I stay after that?  Surely at least 2-4 weeks?
I would appreiate info on what happens AFTER the surgery, so I know more of what to expect.
thanks.

Your surgeon is right don't wait the next outcome could be worse. I am almost 2yrs post having a total abdominal colectomy and you can like Sue said check us all out at the forum about problems with bowel resections, just be ready for anything and everything.

You need to know what your in for and we all have surely been through it but are all right here when you get back, keep us posted as to how you are doing.

As far as the amount of time you will need here on the mainland check with your surgeon he is the only one that can give you those answers. Please make sure you drs back home are well read up on your condition when you return in case of any complications

God bless and keep us posted.

Hi - nearly five years ago I underwent a total colectomy for torrential diverticular bleeding.  This is a more drastic operation than your sigmoid colectomy but there will still be common features.

In response to another Medhelp patient I recorded my experiences on:-

Have a look at that and do come back if you would like more info
