25 yrs old...abnormal pap...very nervous!

I have been going to the gyno since I was 18yrs old and have never had an abnormal pap...my doc office called and said I needed to come back in bc their were some changes in my cells compared to my pap for last yr. They never used the words abnormal, but anytime there r changes in cells of cervix that's abnormal right? I'm really nervous does changes of cells automatically mean cancer? I had a yeast infection when I went and I read that can cause abnormal paps...is that true? I just need to know what to expect on this 2nd visit...what will they do differently compared to first one.

Thanx!!

Try not to worry.  I had the same thing when I was really young, early 20's.  My dr. repeated the pap, which came back even worse.  He did biopsies, which showed pre-cancerous tissues so he froze my cervix.  I had to repeat my paps every 6 months for 2 years, all of which came back normal.

I went 20 years with no problems.  Then my pap came back bad again.  Now I have the HPV virus, which can cause cervical cancer.  I have a pap every 3 months now with an Oncologist, have for the past year.  So far so good.

Don't have unprotected sex, people have STD's they have no clue they even have.  I was with the same person for 2 years and it happened to me.  The pap will show if it's HPV or not.

This is more common than you think.

I had the same thing about ten years ago. I had a biopsy done and it came back saying I had pre cancerous cells. I have not had an abnormal one since though. From what I know, this is very common and your Dr will know what to do. Having the pap every year is the best way to stay on top of it. Also, there are many things that can cause a pap to come back as abnormal. Having sex with 24hrs of a pap is one of them. Hope it all works out for you!

I've had the same experience. This was about 5 years ago, it may goa away which in my case did and I have not had an abnormal PAP in years. SO no need for alarm. It could be HPV but then again I'm not a doctor. I would just repeat the PAP if the doc wants me to and then wait for next year to see if it changes. It could be a million things, the only definitive way of knowing is by doing a biopsy.
