Several times a day I smell that something is burning although investigation shows that in fact there is no cause.  Is this of any cliical significance?

No not particularly rubber.  Just a general smellnotg anything  particular.

Phantom smells or olfactory hallucinations can be clinical if they are related to a brain tumor or epilepsy (patients often smell things before a seizure). People who have had a head injury can also smell strange things if there was injury to the olfactory pathways.   It could also be related to a sinus infection. I
