help

I'm 53 years old and recently just learn I have COPD/ Emphysema. I had problems breathing for awhile. I had smoked for 35 years. I also had valley fever and T.B. I went through the year of treatment. So my lungs have been put to test I would say. I was hospitalized for two weeks. And have returned a couple of nights do to complications. Like high blood pressure, big time body cramps, and a high fever. I was sent home on oxygen. My question is. I would like to know if I'll be ever to run again with my three grandchildren? They are really all I care about.

I am not certain, but I think it is the amount of oxygen you are getting in the lungs. That is a low number. I hope the oxygen will bring it back up.

The lungs can heal but it depends on how bad the damage is and if you quit smoking permanetly.  You may have to walk instead of run.Do you have to stay on oxygen or is it temporary? Take nice walks with your grandchildren they care about time with you and I'm sure walking or playing with them is wonderful! You really have put your lungs to the test. My mother had TB when she was in her twenties, then she had a lung removed. She continued to smoke her whole life. But didn't get valley fever even though we lived in the San Gabriel Valley, California. I gave up running (though I love it ) due to back problems and osteoarthritis. It is hard to stop when you are usually active. I walk a hour  a day and it lets me see the sights more....

That's a question that only time will tell for you a lot depends on how you are doing , you don't have to run you can do many other good things with them, board games are fun and children love them ,just being there in a park whilst they have a good time is important, taking an interest in any hobby or school work is also great for children .Not many grandparents run a lot you are not alone , but I can see how acring you are ..all will be well do what you can ., I see you are new here , welcome to Med Help come and join some groups and other forums .
