Hi and I wouldn't worry about the 8.8 value. Usually, they abbreviate and the 8.8 is 8,800 WBCs (white blood cells). Ask your doctor if the lab result is abbreviated. I am sure they will tell you it is normal. The normal range is 5.0-9.9 depending on the lab which is really 5,000 to 9,900. If it really is  8.8 this would be extemely low, but I have seen the values abbreviated this way.
hope this helps.

HIV means you are carrying it in your body. It continues to change your white blood cells into HIV cells. some people find their white count drops fast and are given a regimen of anti-retro virals.
AIDS is when your white blood cell count drops below 200, some doctors say 150. That is the point where your body becomes unable to defend itself from simple colds, fever or worse pnemonia or cancer.
Now if your doctor was saying that your count is that low he/she would have spoken to you about hospitalization. obviously he hasnt given you that talk so you aren't .

The HIV test is totally different from the test that you had.  Your test sounds like a complete blood count.  If you feel the need for being tested for HIV, please, by all means, ask your doctor to please have you tested.  It is a specialized test and must be marked "HIV" for the test requested. Hope this helped.

HIV means you carry the virus; full-blown AIDS is the disease itself.

There are many folks living with HIV who never develop full-blown aids. Fortunately, drugs for AIDS these days are pretty effective compared to the ones given in the early days of AIDS.

WBC is just that, white blood cell count.  He probably gave you the percentage amount rather than the full count. It does sound low although I am unsure what the number is for.
At the same time, It isn't definitive of HIV or AIDS. That would be a viral load. Or at least antibody testing. Please speak to your doctor more about this. Explain to them you aren't familiar with the terms used and ask them to explain better.
