Pitting Edema

About 2 and a half years ago, I had shin trauma while playing soccer. My shin developed a large bruise, which went away after icing. However, a few months after the injury, i developed pitting edema in my right shin. My whole leg swells from the ankle to my hips, but the only part that pits is on top of my shin bone. It's worse when I wear anything with elastic on my legs or if I stand for a long time, but my right leg is always noticeably bigger than my left. I went to the doctor and was told it should go away after a few weeks, but that was two years ago and it is as bad as when it started. Any suggestions?

Did you ever find out what your pitting edema was caused by?

Hello,

Perhaps you should consult with a vascular physician; sounds suspicious of vascular problem.  The medical physician must have diagnosed it as just being inflammation pertaining to the trauma.

Meanwhile, try to keep the leg elevated when you can and avoid standing for long periods of time on it.  Clothing should be loose around the leg as well.

Good luck.
