My girlfriend had sharp stomach pains in her lower right abdomen a few days ago. I suspected appendicitis. We went to the emergency room where they did an ultrasound and a CT scan. The scan showed a peculiar result - the appendix appeared somewhat inflamed but her intestines had also gotten partially twisted. The doctor wasn't sure if it was appendicitis or if it was just the torsion that was causing the pain. If it was the torsion, then it could become untwisted over time. They sent us home with some pain pills and said to monitor the pain and come back in 3 days if it did not subside.
After 3 days she did feel better and didn't have much pain anymore, so we figured it was fine. But her family started telling her about their experiences with a burst appendix, namely that you can actually feel much better when it initially bursts, and then start to get all kinds of worse symptoms a day or two later. This is now her second day of feeling better, and we're debating whether to let it be and keep monitoring it, or to go back to the hospital to check for a burst appendix. I know that the longer you let a burst appendix sit, the more serious the health concerns can be.
This is all complicated by the fact that she doesn't currently have insurance, and the first visit to the ER was already very expensive. We don't want to go back and have another expensive scan if there's nothing wrong. I'm just not sure what the most prudent course of action is right now.
