Uncontrollable Shivering, Metallic taste, please help

Hi I am 33 and female. I have had this problem off and on for many years. Every doctor I've ever had has not been able to help me with this problem. They all come up with " don't worry, if it doesn't happen all the time"

Here's an example: A few hours ago I put on a sweat shirt grabbed my keys and went to get in my car. It is roughly in the 60's here in Indiana and not particularly cold. BUT, between the house and the car which is not even 15 feet away, I got so cold that by the time I got in the car I was shivering so hard I could not move other than to sit in the car and shiver. after the shivering subsided i had a bad metallic taste in my mouth. It took a few minutes for the shivering to stop. and when it mostly did, I was still freezing cold, shaking,  and my teenage son who was with me, was very worried and said : mom it's not that cold, are you ok?

I'm not taking any medications, I live a stable, fairly heathy life, for the most part. and I don't understand why this happens to me "sometimes"  It doesnt happen daily, but it has happened twice this week and the last time before that was a few months ago.

Anyone have any ideas what this is caused by? Please , twice in a week is 2 times too many.  It is scary and I don't know who else to ask, when I look it up online I can't find anything.
thanks in advance.

I have this on occasion.  Cannabis & food is the precursor and lying down is definitely the trigger that unleashes the shivers and a metal taste in my mouth.  Oddly,  if I focus hard upon the parts of my body I am able to stabilize the shaking and relax my entire body.  It's not easy but it's a lot better than the uncontrolled shivering.  I too am taking anti-depressants.

Ugh I have this same issue. I actually just had it and was searching to figure out what the heck is going on! I get super cold randomly like either when I am inside and then get up off the couch to grab a drink or leave to go to the store like you said and have to make a trip to the car in semi cold or cold weather. I get super cold suddenly then get these weird shivers like all of my muscles in whole body tense up and I shiver. When my shivering subsides I get a metallic taste in my mouth. Push the repeat button until I get under a warm blanket or something. Cuz it just won’t stop. I have asked my dr about it and he brushes it off like I don’t know never heard of it. But it is frustrating! Thalassemia runs in my family but I was told I don’t have it.i am also heat sensitive soo it’s like too hot under th blanket take it off And I’m freezing..  I just want to be normal! Arg!! And to figure all this out..

Metallic taste can come from antibiotics.  If you don't take antibiotics you might try taking Zinc.  Zinc usually works on strange or unusual taste.

In my case I shiver and am cold constantly. I have a severe thyroid disease hypothyroidism and Hashimotas disease. I have an intolerence to temperature change especially in the colder, winter months. Then, I can't move from shivering so much and this is in the heated indoors! It like my thermostat doesn't work. Have a complete thyroid panel done on you and redo it if it shows no results. Its the TSH you need to keep checking. Sometimes you can have thyroid disease and TSH shows normal at doctors. So it can be decieving.

Hi all, a small update, I did have anemia, and I recently had a hysterectomy  for a fibroid growth. I haven't had any shivering episodes since my surgery, but I am scared that they are just around the corner with winter fast approaching.

I haven't ever taken anti depressants, but I have taken ad/ hd mess in the past, but am not currently on anything. Like some of you most of my "episodes" seems to happen at night.  I haven't been to a doctor that can tell me what is wrong yet. Other than to say it may be anemia and to eat more red meat and protein.  I am the original poster of this question, please keep me updated if anyone figures this out.

I think it might have something to do with having taken anti depresants in the past . Probably makes us more sensitive to cold/ temperature changes. Ive experenced that in the past where i start shivering badly that my chest starts to hurt almost if it was my heart.

I also suffer from Extreme shivering.  Last week it was so bad that my heart was physically hurting (very scary).  There have been times that I have woken up shivering so hard that I was nearly paralyzed.  Not anemic, do take meds, doc's don't seem to think it's a big deal.  Their response is that I'm 'skinny'. However, I've been around thin people who are not feeling cold when I am freezing.  The cold comes from my bones and only so often, will another's body heat may warm me up.  My muscles get sore from laying in a fetal position in an attempt to stay warm.  Being Cold makes me very irratible.  Supposedly, it's not Raynard's Syndrome.  I empathize with others who go through what I go through.  If anyone gets a definitive answer on what can cause, or at the very least, go away,  I would love for you to share your findings.  P.S.  Moving South doesn't help.

You are not alone. I am a 49 year old male and this problem started sometime in the last 4 years. However, I can say that I have always been sensitive to cold.
I have not noticed any metallic taste in my mouth but other than that, the same thing happens to me.  I also had a friend over for the weekend and he has the same problem. Before I read your note, he was the only other person I knew of that had this problem. He said that it seems to coincide with eating. He said that if he has a meal and then goes outside and the temperature is lower he will shake and shiver until he warms up.
I have dinner with friends in the mountains almost every Saturday night. I have to put on a hat and coat and run to the car when I am ready to go home.
I have sat in my car and was paralyzed with shivering waiting for the car to warm up. The shivering hurts. It is very very uncomfortable. It sort of feels like every cell in my body is cramping. I have a fear that my heart will cramp up and my friends will find me in dead in my car. I do not really expect that to happen, however the pain and shivering is extreme and it is a little scary.
