abcess on back

I have been having problems with a cyst or abscess that was what I am going to call dormant for a long time. I had it checked by a dermatologist he said since it was in the muscle part of my back he would not recommend to have it cut out...Now its inflamed went to a clinic they said to just heat compress it then wet to my PCP who game me SULFA and some pain killers told me also to heat compress it...now it is no longer HOT it was a HOT spot but now it looks PURPLE. Still hurts looks scabbie but have not noticed any drainage any advice?

Probably this is simply congealed blood. That being said, in view of the fact your dermatologist determined the abcess is deep, I would not self-treat, but go back for a further evaluation. If you have a good relationship with your primary you could use a digital camera or cell phone to capture a close-up (next to a ruler) and e-mail it to her/him. I do this with several elderly patients I care fior with healing bedsores. It saves a visit.

If there is no broken skin, you can apply magnesium sulphate paste to draw the boil/abscess to surface.  You can purchase this from the pharmacist.  The SULFA that your PCP gave you may be the same.  It is a drawing ointment, but needs to be used as directed and it can take quite some time for the abscess to surface.

You do not say for how long you have been applying the SULFA and now that the spot looks purple, I suggest you see your PCP again to examine the spot.  It may be ready for lancing or you may require an oral antibiotic.
