leg muscle injury after walking too far.

Hi, I have been sitting too much due to a chronic back injury.  I don't work and can't lift more than about 2-3 pounds, but over time I have been walking daily.  I finally have been walking hills and flat areas steadily about 2 miles a day for a while. I also have been doing about 200 small stairs every other day.  I am going on a big trip and need to be able to walk more so I increased my walking to about 3 miles for a week then 3 1/4 for a few days then 3   and 3 1/2 miles for a couple of days then  2 and 3/4 miles a couple of days then 4 for a couple of days. Then I woke up with a sore leg.  I could hardly walk due to stiff thigh and a sore knot in the thigh. I took a day off and only did 2 miles it still hurt and just continued the 2 miles and it had been a week and it still hurts. I know it is from the lack of exercise and I must have gone up too fast. Is there a way to help my injured leg heal. I took another day off but need to keep walking. I have the trip in a month and can't put it off it is an expensive trip.  Any and all advice is great. Another problem is I have a frozen shoulder so I can't get into the bath tub for a soak.
thanks,

Hello and thank you for posting on the forum. From the information shared by you there can be few possibilities in your condition. It seems that you have developed a sprain. It is caused by an injury of any soft tissue structure in the plantar complex or collateral ligament. These injuries can vary in severity like from stretching of the soft tissue to partial tearing, and even total dislocation of the MTP joint. It is diagnosed by physical examination and imaging tests like X-rays and MRI.You may try the RICE protocol in which RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Use cold packs for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. To help prevent additional swelling, wear an elastic compression bandage. Try applying local analgesic creams .A complete clinical examination and work up is necessary for appropriate diagnosis and management of your condition. It is suggested to see an orthopaedician and get evaluated so that the right therapy is initiated. Take care and keep us posted. Best regards!

Hi and thanks for your reply. The injury is not in the knee ( collateral ligament) or foot (plantar comlex) in is in the thigh muscle in the center of the muscle. So I think it is a strain or sprain but was thinking it was more like DOMS or Delayed onset muscle soreness. And I was wondering if walking more would make it worse or not hurt it anymore. I did take two days off and it helped and I walked today and did ok. I already rested and took NSAIDS, and will see my doctor if it doesn't go away soon. If you have any comment regarding DOMS or the muscle pull I would appreciate it.
thanks,
