patient records andconfidentiality

Please can you help me with this query. My son has had abnormal liver results over the last 4 months.it has been diagnosed as viral hepatitis. During this time I asked for copies of  regular bloods taken so I could keep a record of progress. The hospital were happy to give me those taken in hospital. However when I was at home the receptionist at the surgery was insistent that I got GP permission each time. Was this because it was for my son? I thought as guardian I was entitled to copies of test results? Every time I go through the same. Its been very useful to have them as I was recently quick to spot a trend and get a specialist referral. Please could someone advise me on current trends in access to a childs/own medical test results.
thanks
MJ

thanks..that helps alot. i know a friend told me much the same...that these records were available for a minor and indeed myself on request. My son is 14 so Im  then Im permitted. Parhaps its just the practice Im.in .as its always been a real battle to get my sons results or indeed mine.I guess I was looking for the go-ahead to be positively assertive!!!If a consultant sends a letter to your Dr. re a consultation (or a Dr to a consultant).some will send you a copy and others will not. can I assume that I can also request a copy or is that different?
i ask because recently a  Gp I saw with my son suggested he was suffering from teenage stress and I believe  this affected the nature of the consultation with the specialist. In fact bloods then showed he was suffering from jaundice and had viral hepatitis , which was why he was  so tired. I would have liked a copy of the referral note
Thanks again for you time
Thanks for your time

When I was younger I had quite a few reproductive health issues...and until I turned 16 the doctors were more than happy to discuss/release any and all test results to my parents.  However, once I turned 16 I had to sign a release saying that my mother could have any test results she wanted.  If your son is over 16 you may want to check with your doctor regarding a medical release?  I know that once I signed mine it stayed in my medical chart and my mom never had a problem from there on out.  Also...now that I am married I have updated my chart that my husband is allowed to have any and all medical tests released to him.  We haven't needed to use it...but its good to have just in case!

Hope this helps!
