Hi Caregiver222,
just as an aside from the question the person asked. What is too much Metamucil (more then they say for a daily amount) ? and what happens if you use it daily? Any problems with that? It sure helps me I just use a heaping teaspoon a day in a large glass of water, mix well and drink right away or it gets too thick. I can see that it may  choke someone if they let it sit.

They can end up being life-threatening, from the cumulative loss of blood. You need to have a hematocrit taken periodically. One male patient I know personally ended up in the ER with a hematocrit (red blood cell count)  of 17 (normal46), and blacked out on the street.  He almost died. All from haemorrhoids. There are several surgical options, ranging from excision to freezing with nitrogen to laser burning to old fashioned cauterization. While it is true they often go away with proper diet, if well-established, do not hesitate to consider surgery. If you use Metamucil DO NOT USE TOO MUCH, and drink plenty of fluids.

I your piles (haemorrhoids) are severe then surgery would be the best option.

If they are moderately troublesome, you can use a suppository that you insert into the anal canal for easy motions and an ointment that helps to shrink them.  Proctosedyl comes in both ointment and suppositories.

As well as those medications, you should take a medication like Macrogol to soften your stools.  Eat a healthy diet with lots of roughage (fruit with skin, oranges, prunes, sweet corn, cabbage, oats etc) and drink plenty of water 2-3 litres is usually recommended.

Going for a walk will get your bowels moving.

To avoid getting haemorrhoids it is important not to strain with hard motions and have a diet that contains roughage that will help you go easily.  Constipation and going excessively to empty the bowels can also aggravate piles.

They usually go away on their own. Best to have a good plant based diet with fruit and lots of water to keep things flowing and try not to get constipated. Try not to scrub the area when using the toilet and rather pat the area clean when cleaning up. I know it hurts. I take Metamucil every day too.
