Learning disabilities can affect people with normal chromosomes as well as people with abnormal chromosomes.  It is unclear to me from your post whether or not your son has been diagnosed with a chromosomal difference.

Chromosomal re-arrangements (and cases of missing and extra chromosomes) can be inherited, but more often than not it is a new occurence, an isolated occurence.  (It's estimated that about 1/3 of people with re-arrangements inherited the change, and 2/3 are new occurences.)   Keep in mind too, depending on the type of re-arrangement, even people with chromosomal changes very often have no disability at all, learning or otherwise.  Depending on the type of chromosome testing being done, results can take 2-6 weeks.  If changes are found in either yours or your son's chromosomes, genetic counseling would be recommended.

Best wishes to you and your son,

I'm curious to know what kind of testing they're doing on you that would take a year to get results...!  Do keep me posted as to what they tell you in two weeks... Wishing you and your son good health.

It sounds like some of your testing may involve dna sequencing, in which case results could be several months rather than several weeks to complete.
I hope the testing gives you the answers you seek...

michelle here what i wanted to ask u is that he has all his chromosones his test came back normal so it seems the the whole family has to get tested now  whats the diference between genes and chromosones for instance when he was born he didnt have nough oxygen in his food to put weight on him u think a mild cerabal palsy could be the problem the pead still cant get to the bottom of this thing. is cerabal palsy a chromosone thing or gene how do they check genes.

Chromosomes are the genetic material that is a part of every human cell.  (The typical person has 23 pairs of chromosomes.)  The genes, or DNA, are like long strings, or "codes," that make up the chromosomes.   Think of a chromosome like a big long key, that has many etchings of different sizes (genes) that give instructions to unlock certain doors.  Although there are usually 46 chromosomes, there are tens of thousands of genes.  There are still many genes that science does not fully understand.

Cerebral palsy can be a result of many different causes, but currently there is no "gene" test to identify its presence.   If your son's chromosome tests were normal, I wonder why they are testing other family members.
