unknown hemoglobin

unknown hemoglobin

Hi,my name is Danielle,i was born which was,1992 The hospital, doctors, etc detected that i had an "unknown hemoglobin"supposidley whatever it was was nothing that they had seen before and they were unable to determine what it was the only thing they were able to determine is that it wasnt harmful. They did a test on my mother and father to see who the carrier was and my mother was the carrier.Scientists and my pediatrician wanted me to send my blood to California so they could do further testing, but my mother didn't want anymore blood taken from me because i had already had alot of blood taken and i guess when i was a baby she didn't want me to look like a "pin cushion".i'm wondering what this thing,in my blood, that is unknown could possibly be,i have been interested lately in attempting to send my blood to be researched somewhere again, but i don't know where.if you could write me back with some info or anything please do! thanks!

Hello Daniellegb.

I had your post (from the Down syndrome Forum moved to this forum - genetics) and I had answered your post in the other one.  See here for the answer:  http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Genetics/unknown-hemoglobin/show/1304226

In addition to anything I have mentioned, please keep in mind, that while I or others may have extensive knowledge in many areas, you should always seek professional medical advice from your own physician, as it pertains to medical conditions or concerns.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to message me directly.

Sincerely,

Hemoglobin variant identification is fairly new.  For many years, there were only several know variations identified (alpha-globin, beta-globin, etc);  however in recent years, especially with the development of blood testing technologies and gene sequencing many previously undescribed/unnamed hemoglobin variants are being studied.
It's important to note that most people who carry hemoglobin variants do not suffer any health issues as a result of having a variant trait.

If you are interested in learning more or doing more research on your particular hemoglobin, it might be worthwhile to see if your pediatrician still has info about what organization was doing the research.  If that information is not readily available, you can call large teaching hospitals (medical centers that are affiliated with large universities) and/or check with Hemotology specialists in your area.  Best of luck. ~eureka
