HIV + blood exposed to the air

I read the CDC information on how long HIV remains infectious outside the body. However, I was very confused and it raised more questions than answers. Primarily, how long can HIV live in blood outside in the regular air and cool weather (around 65 to 70 degrees F)?

Here is the scenario I encountered: I had reason to pick up some clothing with blood on it. About one hour had gone by since the person who was bleeding had removed the items (I have no idea the HIV status of this person). I used gloves and placed them into paper bags. Another 10-15 minutes later I moved the bags. This time I was not wearing gloves. I noticed a medium sized smear (perhaps a few inches long) on the outside of one bag. Obviously this tells me that the item still had moist blood on it when I picked it up. I did not notice any blood on my hands but didn't really insepct them close up. I didn't have any obvious open cuts but more there is always the possibility of minute hard to see cuts. I washed my hands and used a sanitizer but I do have concerns. It has been less than 6 weeks since this occured so I know that getting tested will be uncertain at this time.

Thanks for any input.

The proteins composing the HIV cell are very fragile. When exposed to air or outside it's host, the outer proteins are quickly damaged. This inhibits the ability of HIV to adhere to WBC's (CD4's) preventing infection..

Teak, can you explain what you mean by HIV is not transmitted outside its host? I have seen you say this a few times and can quite understand it? Do you mean as soon as it leave the body it can not be transmitted from an environmental surface?

Does this mean it has to be transferred inside the body or within a syringe that is airtight?

Thanks for any explanation.
