hi,
i am worried that i may be hiv possitive. i had an exposure unprotected sex 8 years ago with a male whos history i do not know. i am a 28 yr old girl. i exposed myself 4 times. this man would have had multiple exposures with al kinds of people and i am worried that he may have had hiv. i was oblivious to this for 8 years but recently it caught up with me. i have had a negative test from my gp but i am still concerned, this was 3 months ago. i have been doing alot of reading on the matter and asking many questions. my main worry is that there is still a possiblity that i may have the virus despite the result. the test that was rerfprmed was a fourth generation test for both antigen and antibody hiv1 and 2. the test is 99.9% specific. there is a chance of error here, is there?????? i have heard about pcr being gold standard but this does not appear to be available to me and is only carried out if a test is possitive. is this correct? as you can tell i know too much about this subject now and am looking for flaws. i wonder if you could ease my mind and put it into context. firstly what are the chances this guy had hiv, secondly what are the chances i could have contracted it and thirdly what are the chances a test could be wrong. it was done 8 yrs post exposure. this isgiving me serious worry. i am in therapy but i still keep thinking mayb i am right and the test is wrong. i dont see the point in getting this test repeated as it will be done in the same manner. i am worried about the 0.1% that isnt covered. please advise me here. i just want it to be the end of this worry, what can i do?

As Lizzie said, you are absolutely safe because your antibody test was conclusive, stop thinking about HIV, you dont have it.

PCR tests are not for primary screening, and your GP orderd the right test for you. Move on

you do not have a hiv concern...you are conclusively negative...no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
