Did I Contract It

Last night I had unprotected sex with a female who tested HIV positive some years ago. Oral sex and vaginal pentration and kissing. She told me that her HIV is dormant and that while I may want to use protection, it's more difficult to contract it from a female. She also stated that her HIV is sow low as to be now undetectable. I need information on the likelihood that I contracted it last night, what I need to do to protect myself and what I don't have to worry about. I would like to continue a relationship with this woman so I want to protect myself and her feelings as well.

Dear Friend ! Do you think, it is a right approach ? You have restricted and isolated yourslef to your room, Just on the basis of fear originating from some symptoms, you believed because of HIV, though symptoms are often misleading and meaningless.

A test done at right time has the following advantages,

1. If you are reported negative, all the worries are behind you and you can move on with your life, family, friends and social activities.

2. If you are positive unfortunately, you can seek appropriate medical help to stay alive with reasonably acceptable life quality.

Please remember, knowledge is life, ignorance is death. Choice is ours,,, a few days tense wait ( now this time is reduced to hours after rapid tests are made commercially available) will save you from stress of infinite hours.

I do not know about procedures for getting medication in the United States, but a developing country like mine, people in large town have access to HIV medication, provided by state run medical centre at a very low cost, less than a couple of dollars a day. And peoploe are surviving because it is really a revolution in HIV therapy.

You are convinced that you have HIV, but I am not, because it is your perception not your test report.

I hope this isn't a joke. If so, u should burn in hell. If not, I hope you're alright. I just can't believe someone would have unprotected sex with someone they knew had HIV. That doesn't make sense.

Going on 2yrs I have isolated myself from the world. I just live off my mother and stay in my room depressed. Convinced I have HIV. I have all the symptoms, but I'm afraid to get tested. I have no way to pay for any medication. U have to be pratically rich to afford all of that. I know I'm screwed.

Dear Thomas ! I fully understand your situation when you don't have enough resources to get what actually you are looking for,,, especially when time is running out for you. However blame game would certainly not going to help you.

In total agreement with NurseGirl and other knowledgeable responded on your post,,, primary responsibility of saving our life lies on our own shoulders. People are now too careful to forget protection even with those they feel they are clean (simply because they are not sure about their status) and you went without protection knowingly,,, What name we give to this act of yours.

In my opinion, it is your feeling of regret and guilt which is mounting your anxiety level that high.

Agreeing with joggan, you still have many odds in your favor and not everyone catches the disease in a single event of unprotected sex with an HIV +ve person. You may dodge the bullet,,,

Another positive side of the picture is, you are not living in a far flung village of Africa or Asia where people do not have access to HAART, better food and quality medical care. And fact is, majority of population living with HIV belongs to those parts of the world today.

In USA and other parts of developed world, you should be thankful that post infection care is readily available and people living with HIV have much better quality of life than their counterparts living in Africa.

We all wish for your good health and pray that you are saved from the virus this time and hope you will be more (most) careful next time,,,,

An ER is an ER, I have dealt with countless satisfaction surveys for the hospital I work at, many consumers point the finger at medical staff, at the end of the day you need to be on the other side of the counter to experience how an emergency nurse or registrar feels during a shift.

I don't know what it even matters. There's not a damn thing I can do about it now. Yes, I'm pissed, but not because I think that anyone else is to blame for my lack of discipline and care. I know who's falut that is, and I accept that (not that it helps any). However, I'm pissed because as serious as this is, I cried for help and not only was there none, but there wasnt any angst in anyone to try to help me. It was all very "oh well."  It almost seemed as though my problem inconvenienced and irritated some of the people I spoke to (especially nurses). I did not see a concern for human life (not that they have none), I saw a preference to not have to face the problem. Do you want me to say that I didn't experience this, that everyone seemed genuinely concerned and troubled by my plight? Ok. I've made some of you mad and you reported me. Well, I'm sorry you don't understand my feelings. Whatever your opinion of my feelings, my feelings are real and valid and natural to the situation. Pardon my expression of them.

hey mate.
Don't beat your self up to much. Humans are prone to make mistakes, even when informed of the facts. The fact is, whats done is done and you must try not to let the guilt, anger, anxiety, pain and sadness over the next 6 - 12 weeks totally consume you. You wont die tomorrow, and you have a good chance of missing the bullet in this situation (there is evidence that suggests most of the people who do get HIV get it from people who are are not aware of their status and have a higher viral load (and more than one exposure)) google hiv transmition patterns. If her viral load really is that low, your chances are probably even better to avoid it. You will learn a lot about yourself over the next 3 months.

I think you are right to be angry about your medical care. It sounds totally under-equipped and uncaring. Surprising and saddening they wont immediately give it to you (maybe making you pay it back or something) You live in the richest country in the world, and only the elite can stay out of 2nd world conditions. People who climb wet ladders are usually taken into emergency wards in america aren't they? Are they told," you knew the risks, no one to blame but yourself ?  You will make more mistakes, and there are millions of people who made this one, after all, evolution primed you to make this mistake, and you did as you were told by you hormones.
I have total compassion for you, and feel you have a right to be angry at your societies lack of care for you. Good luck

I couldn't agree more.....that you have NO one to blame but yourself.  I know that isn't very reassuring, but it is the truth.  I get so angry when people start playing the "blame" game.  It is the ER's fault that they didn't prescribe it...or someone's job's fault for not paying enough so one can afford PEP...or a clinic/hospital's fault for not doing MORE to get a pretty rare, uncommonly prescribed, VERRRRY expensive medication in your hand, free of charge, or in 10 min.

Bottom line is YOU placed yourself at risk KNOWING this woman was HIV +.

I hope for your sake that you come out of this okay....and I hope to GOD it is a HUGE lesson learned.  Some things cannot be undone.  While it may not be a great analogy...your complaints about not having access to PEP is like a woman being upset that she couldn't obtain the "morning after" pill to prevent pregnancy the day after she decides to have unprotected sex.  Ya know?

The odds are still on your side. It might help to consult with her ID doctor. You should still be under a doctor's care for proper testing.

Hopefully, this will just turn out to be a learning experience for you, albeit a somewhat traumatic one.

After reading this post I just feel sad, I hope thomas does note get it,
I have gathered information from this site only that it is 1:1000 chance.
So be hopeful..
also I feel that hospital and agencies should have been a little polite and understanding about this issue.
Someone contracting it just coz of 1000 dollars is a an open question to mankind

When are you going to start taking the blame for not using condoms? The only one you have to be bitter with is yourself.

If I do turn up HIV positive, I am going to be one incredibly bitter man. I cannot believe the callousness of the medical community (including CDC). I cannot believe this ****!!!!!!!

Alright, I went to Vanderbilt Comprehensive Clinic this morning, as suggested by the ER doc. I gave the lady the scripts given me. She ran around for a few minutes and came back, "I'm sorry we have no resources to help you. But on the positive side it's unlikey that you contracted it." Ok, so I called Summit MEdical Center ER and told them of my experience with VCCC, "Well, there's nothing we can do." I bitched, "It's not OUR fault Mr. Hall" she says. I am pissed. What is this ****? No one cares about stemming the epidemic? Let's just spread this **** around? My life means nothing? Too bad? In four or five hrs my 72 will be up. I got to sit here and stress?  What is this, charging HIV patients ungodly high drug charges? How do HIV patients manage to live with so much financial weight? I am sick. I am angry. Sure tell me it's my fault, like I don't kniow that.

I'm under the impression that you people think that all Pharmacy's carry HIV medications, they don't. It's alot more work than thinking you can go into a Pharmacy and get those prescriptions. A lot of pharmacy's don't carry them and keep them in stock.

I use to be on those scripts and had to do away with Kaletra due to side effects. I take Atripla which is around 1400 for 30 pills.

Can it be contracted by filatio? Can it be contracted by french kissing? Can it be contracted by her giving me oral?

Well that will cost you around 1000 bucks to fill those prescriptions.

You were prescribed Truvada and Kaletra for PEP.

It's best to start these meds ASAP. If it were me, I would borrow money, visit the pawn shop, or do whatever it takes to fill the Rx today. However, tomorrow morning would still be within 72 hours.

Your blood test was too early to identify HIV infection from your exposure on Friday. However, it will establish a baseline.

I went to summit medical center this morning. They took blood to test me for HIV and Hepititus B and gave me two perscriptions (Truvada and Kaletra). Of course since I have no money I can't get them filled until tomorrow. It was fiday evening at about 4:00pm and it's now Sunday 12noon. I can wait until tomarrow morning. right?  I asked them about PEP and for whatever reason they didn't feel inclined to do that.

RUSH TO GET PEP-POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS BEFORE YOU FULLY SEROCONVERT, IT CAN BE STOPPED INITS VERY INITIAL STAGES TO a great extent, run dont wait for any more replies or browse info. RUSH WITHIN 72 HOURS LATER ON YOU REALLY CAN DO NOTHING.
incidence of single  penetrative acts world wide is low, but you still have a huge risk
ALL THAT MATTERS IS TO SAVE YOURSELF> HIV +VE persons can also enjoy sex but it needs to be protected THATS VERY IMPORTANT<
