The condom failed...

Good afternoon,

I live in Singapore. I just had sex 2 hours ago with a girl. I don't know her well and she told me she was clean but I cannot be sure about it...

We had sex during 20mins and I noticed that the condom totally broke... Probably less than 2 or 3 mins but still...

What do you think about the post-treatment exposure ? I am really freaking out now... It's the first time I broke a condom :( !

Over on the Experts forum, Drs. HHH and Hook cite the odds of female-to-male transmission as being roughly 1 in 2000 from a single epsiode of unprotected vaginal sex (assuming of course that the female is even infected. If she's not infected then the odds are zero).

Given that in all likelihood you partner was clear, chances are you're home free. You could (and perhaps should) test anyway just for peace of mind. But the odds are very much in your favour.

dubguy's "50/50 chance" statement is ***way*** off the mark and can be safely ignored.

But Teak you agree on the fact that there is one chance out of 2000 to get infected from this exposure ?

Sure as long as you know that you can get infected on your first exposure, it does happen.

Of course ! I usually get tested every 6 months anyway... I always protect myself but it's the first time I broke a condom... I can get HIV but I can also get a lot of other diseases... I am not saying there is no risk. I am just saying there is more risk from 10 exposures than 1 short one due to condom failure...

The only way to know your status is by testing. It doesn't make a difference if you have only on exposure or 10 exposures you need to test.

The risk is close to 1 out of 2000 right ? Of course I can be the unlucky one but... considering she probably doesn't have anything and the risk being low, i should be ok... I will get tested in 4 then 6 weeks anyway don't worry but it should be fine... I hope so...

Teak what do you mean ? Is this article wrong ? The girl is not a sex worker and she is 19 yrs old. I do think she doesn't have HIV but I cannot be sure at 100%... I am going to push her to get tested with me tonight but so far she has got pissed because I kept asking if she has a disease or not... At least i would know if she had HIV or not 6 weeks ago...

The only health concern you have is your own. Test is the only way to know your status and guestiments won't tell you anything.

Ricky, thank you your reply. Could you give me more information about the chances to get HIV from a single exposure ?

The first poster is right about needing to get tested 3 months post-exposure but wrong about the 50/50 chance.

Unless she is confirmed to be HIV positive you don't meet the guidelines for nPEP.
